Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between personal and executive coaching?
Personal coaching, commonly called 'life coaching' is about developing you as an individual and focuses on personal goal areas. When we agree to work together I will take you through a thorough goal setting process to clarify your specific unique personal goals.
Executive clients include CEO's, senior and middle managers who use a coach to help them navigate the challenges of their personal and professional lives so they can minimize stress and burnout. Executives want a coach who can raise their awareness and help them plan for improved performance and generate career momentum.
As an executive coach my focus is on developing you personally and as a leader within your organisation.
The executive coaching packages I offer includes both a mix of coaching and just in time training to assist you overcoming challenges in the work place. The training includes a solutions-based skill set, so you have the available tools to deal with common yet complex work situations.
It is not uncommon for a CEO or senior manager to be constantly bombarded with difficult decisions. I offer a range of Executive Coaching packages which include being available between scheduled coaching sessions, allowing you to phone to contact me to talk through difficult situations. What type of clients do you prefer to work with?
My executive clients also have a desire to grow as people and in their respective fields and realise that no one achieves personal success in business or life on their own. They seek out the wisdom, knowledge and guidance of an accomplished coach. They know they don't have all the answers and that I can help them develop strategies to succeed.
As a coach I can be indispensable in identifying learning objectives that can have a substantial impact both to the executive client and their organization.
Nearly every high-achieving individual, supervisor, manager or executive has had a mentor or a coach to challenge and encourage them. They want someone to be their sounding board, provide unbiased help when they come up against inevitable obstacles involved with people and business, and be a neutral contributor in decision-making.
What happens if you haven’t worked with people with my background?
I don’t need to understand your background completely, or know your area of expertise to coach you effectively. In fact, having specialist knowledge and expertise can lessen the coaching experience by prematurely closing down possible solutions.
How are you different from other people who call themselves coaches?
Many people call themselves coaches without any formal training or experience. I am an experienced and professionally Certified Level 2 Coach with Results Coaching Systems. RCS is a global coaching and training organisation recognised by the ICF (International Coach Federation).
Not only do I run my own coaching business, but I train, assess and mentor other coaches.
What type of person is coaching UNLIKELY to work for?
Coaching is unlikely to work for people who are unable to take responsibility for their own lives; or is not really committed to making changes and expects the coach to provide them with all the answers.
Is coaching totally confidential?
Yes. If your organisation is paying for you to be coached they may request reports on your progress. I won’t provide any reports to your employer without your consent and prior approval.
Can I contact some of your former coaching clients to see what it’s like to work with you?
Yes you can - as soon I have my client’s permission for you to contact them.

If we agree to work together we will decide in the initial session whether our coaching calls are weekly, fortnightly or another schedule that works for us both. I will guide you as to what I believe will work best for you. We usually keep the same time each week/fortnight/month if possible.
What time of day are the coaching calls?
We can discuss the best time of day for your coaching calls when we agree to work together. Some clients prefer evenings, early mornings and occasionally weekends for their sessions. I do my best accommodate times that suit you.
How does phone coaching work?
You call me at the agreed time and I will manage the coaching session over the phone. You will need to have a quiet area where you won’t be interrupted and your coaching folder available to you. I treat these sessions exactly the same as face to face coaching – only we are not in the same room.
Phone coaching is surprisingly powerful as distractions are minimised and it allows for deep and focused interaction.
How does Skype coaching work?
Skype is a free software programme you can download from the Internet. Using Skype allows you to make free calls over the internet and low cost call to anywhere in the world. Skype allows us to see and talk to each other simultaneously if you have a computer with a webcam and a microphone. It is very much like talking on the telephone, only we can see each other at the same time.
Many laptops have built in web cameras and microphones. If you are working from a computer that doesn’t, then the equipment is inexpensive to buy.
If I prefer face to face sessions can I meet with you for my coaching?
Yes, you can. I am based in central Wellington and can organise to meet with you.
Do I have to sign a coaching contact?
Yes, I have a contract which outlines both our responsibilities.
How does coaching differ from counselling and consulting?
Usually people seek counselling when they are having psychological health problems, or emotional difficulties. A counsellor can help you understand why you think and behave in a particular way.
Coaches spend the smallest amount of time possible on what happened in your life, and more on where you want to be and how to get there. If I feel you have deep seated emotional issues which prevent you from moving forward with coaching, I will refer you on. Sometimes people being coached choose to work with a counsellor and a coach simultaneously.
Coaches are not consultants. Generally consultants are engaged to provide their expertise and advice in a particular area.
Will you tell me what to do?
No – I won’t tell you what to do! As a coach I may offer suggestions, particularly if you get stuck. You needn’t take on any of my suggestions.
How many goals is it reasonable to work on?
We will work on between 1-3 primary or large goals depending on your particular needs. We will not work on more than 3 primary goals during a coaching series.
Do you guarantee I will achieve my goals?
No I cannot guarantee you will achieve your goals. But if you really apply yourself to being coached the outcomes can astound you.
What if I need to cancel a session?
If you need to cancel a session you need to give me 24 hours notice so we can reschedule as soon as possible. If you do not provide 24 hours notice I will charge you and I will not reschedule the missed session. Emergencies are always taken into consideration and I will do my best to reschedule the session if possible.
As a coach are you bound by a Code of Ethics?
